The Biggest Threat to Senior Developers? Themselves.

I’ve come across several LinkedIn posts where senior developers have gone off the rails about junior developers using AI and how business leaders are seeing less value in senior devs.

While it’s true that senior developers bring years of experience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to navigate complex, large-scale systems, AI has changed the game. AI should be supercharging your value—not diminishing it.

AI Can and Should Be Your Force Multiplier

If you’re not leveraging AI, you’re missing out on tools that can:

Write boilerplate code in seconds.
Generate test cases and refactoring suggestions.
Detect security vulnerabilities before they become a problem.
Review large codebases for inconsistencies instantly.
Decipher poorly written or fragile algorithms.
Assist with critical design decisions.
Generate developer documentation quickly and efficiently—so you can focus on what truly requires your expertise.
Help with business-related tasks that fall on developers due to small teams or lack of support staff.

The Wrong Mindset Will Make You Obsolete

Senior developers who say, “AI can’t be trusted,” “It gives wrong answers,” or “I can do it faster myself,” are setting themselves up for failure. If you’re saying these things, you haven’t yet learned how to leverage AI effectively.

Tasks that used to take days, weeks, or months should now take a fraction of the time. AI is like Iron Man’s suit—it doesn’t replace the person inside it, but it makes them exponentially more powerful. If AI is giving you bad answers, then you haven’t learned how to mentor AI, refine prompts, or apply critical oversight to its output.

Business Perception vs. Reality

There will always be a gap between how business leaders perceive the value of developers and the intrinsic, unrealized value that tech talent brings to an organization. That’s just part of the job.

If you’re lucky enough to work for a company where business leaders see and value true technical talent, great. If not, welcome to the reality of the tech industry—where the tools and knowledge you’ve mastered over the years only continue to grow in complexity. AI will amplify that evolution, not slow it down.

Your Work Speaks for Itself—Positively or Negatively

Instead of worrying about junior developers replacing you, focus on helping them prepare for what lies ahead and on training AI to make software engineering better for everyone. The value you bring isn’t just what you contribute to your company—it’s how you elevate the entire industry.
